Zhang Zhan, Kings of Khotan during the Tang Dynasty

During the Tang Dynasty, the kings of Khotan usually had two names, one Chinese, the other Indic, as recorded in Chinese and Tibetan sources respectively. The matching of these two sets of names has been a vexing problem ever since the beginning of Khotanese studies. Based on Chinese, Tibetan, and Khotanese sources, especially the newly discovered ones, the author produces a comprehensive identification of the dual names of each king together with a full reconstruction of the chronology of their reigns so as to lay a firm foundation for further discussions on the history of Khotan.
