Harry Falk, The Ashes of the Buddha

The paper deals with the stūpa opened at Piprahwa in 1898 and the find of a stone coffer in it. The coffer as such and its contents are linked to activities of Aśoka at Lumbinī; the placement within the stūpa at Piprahwa is explained as part of a rescue operation towards the end of Mauryan rule when Lumbinī lost its royal patronage and was no longer safe from vandalism by non-Buddhist pressure groups. Recent attempts at finding forgeries connected with the Piprahwa excavation and linking them to a "Siam Conspiracy" theory are rebuked.
