Stephanie W. Jamison, Avestan xšuuīd: A Relic of Indo-Iranian Ritual Vocabulary

The word xšuuīd- appears once in Old Avestan as well as several times in Younger Avestan. Although its Old Avestan occurrence is in one of the more devilish parts of the Gāthās, Y. 29, the famous “Lament of the Soul of the Cow,” there is remarkable agreement among modern Gāthic interpretors about its meaning: it is unanimously translated as ‘milk’. I will here give the passage in question with Humbach’s (1991) translation as a convenience.
