Michael Willis, "Avalokiteśvara of the Six Syllables: Locating the Practice of the ‘Great Vehicle’ in the Landscape of Central India"

This article explores the presence of Mahāyāna Buddhism in central India through a newly discovered cave shrine with rock-cut images of the Buddha and Tārā near Raisen in Madhya Pradesh. The cave also contains an inscription mentioning Mahāyāna. This material is brought together with an image of Ṣaḍakṣarī Avalokiteśvara in the British Museum, also from central India, and a coeval sādhana dedicated to Āryaṣaḍakṣarīmahāvidyā in the Sādhanamālā.
