Gregory Schopen, "Regional Languages and the Law in Some Early North Indian Buddhist Monasteries and Convents"

References in Buddhist monastic literature to regional languages are rare but the use of such languages by Buddhist monks and nuns must have been common, and given their peripatetic life style misunderstandings and miscommunications must also have been. At least one little text directly addresses such a miscommunication and the legal issues it raises. This text is presented here and discussed in light of other references to the use of spoken languages."
