Jens-Uwe Hartmann, The Foolish Cat and the Clever Mouse: Another Parable from an Unknown Story Collection"

Among the numerous manuscript fragments found in the nineties of the last century in Bamiyan there are two rather unusual folios. Each folio contains on one side the Jātakamālā, and the two folios appear to be consecutive, since the two Jātakamālā sides connect seamlessly; on the other side they contain, in a different script, an unknown story collection. The article attempts an explanation of this strange state of affairs and, as an illustration, presents one of the stories of the unknown collection. Although too fragmentary to understand the whole plot, enough of the text remains to see that a clever mouse is caught by a cat and conceives a stratagem which fools the cat and allows an escape.
