David Frendo, Emending a Name: Theophylact Simocatta’s Version of the Correspondence between Khusrau II and Bahram Chobin

The present article translates, examines, and analyzes the Byzantine historian Theophylact Simocatta’s version of the correspondence between Khusrau II and Bahram Chobin. The competing claims of rival genealogies of the “Sasanian” dynasty are then examined and discussed and an attempt is made to understand and account for these in terms of their historical context, motivation, and evolution.
