Rahim Shayegan, On the Rationale behind the Roman Wars of Sabuhr II the Great

The aim of this essay to discuss the political rationale behind Sabuhr IIís Roman wars. In particular, Sabuhr IIís alleged claim to former Achaemenid territories under Constantius IIís reign is investigated by taking into account the intent of comparable demands made by Sabuhr IIís predecessors, Ardaxsir I and Sabuhr I, almost a century before. Following a brief survey of Sabuhr IIís early career, the status quaestionis of Achaemenid reminiscences in early Sasanian Iran is presented by focusing on Iranian epigraphic material.
