This article documents the history and decipherment of some of the earliest
manuscript discoveries from Chinese Turkestan, and describes the work and
unmasking of a group of manuscript forgers who were active between1895 and
the 1930s. Examples from the British Library's Hoernle and SteinCollections
illustrate the kind of forgeries which were prevalent at the time.
