Vladimir Livshits, Sogdian Sanak, A Manichaean Bishop of the
5th-Early 6th Century
In this paper the bullae found at the site of Kanka (Tashkent—Chach
oasis) in 1995 are examined. There are twenty specimens depicting a male
bust and bearing a Sogdian inscription, which on paleographical grounds
can be dated to the 5th-early 6th century. This inscription runs: ‘spsk
s’’nk kw’tynk | aespasak Sanak Kawatenak (Manichaean Bishop Sanak, son of
Kawat).
