Robert L. Brown, The Walking Tilya Tepe Buddha: A Lost Prototype
A small metal token from the Afghanistan site of Tilya Tepe represents,
on one side, the Buddha as a naked bearded man pushing the Wheel of the Law.
A lion is depicted on the other. The token dates to around the first
half of the first century A.D., and represents a Western influenced model
for the Buddha that was not propagated in later art. However, the
walking Buddha pushing the Wheel appears in Gandharan representations of
the Buddha, demonstrating a sharing and continuation of this unusual and
geographically specific iconographical type.
