D. T. Potts, An Ass for Ares
Strabo (15.2.14) refers to the use of asses in warfare and to the
sacrifice of an ass to Ares by the Karmanians. This paper examines the
implications of Strabo's remark, looking at Karmania and what we know
about it in the Achaemenid period; the use of the ass in war; and the
religious context of animal sacrifice to an Iranian god assimilated
with Ares.
